Western North Carolina Historical Association Achievement Award for 2000

Each year this organization recognizes an individual or group for outstanding achievement in historical research or preservation in the western region of our state.

"Your museum is one of the oldest in our area. Instead of just resting on this laurel, the Museum of the Cherokee Indian has not only continued to preserve the history of native life in our area but also has brought the museum into the twenty-first century with a new and contemporary freshness and a modern facility. This is what has impressed us, and this is the reason we would be honored to present this award to your museum."

Governor's Business Award for Cultural and Arts Organizations in N.C.

Governor Jim Hunt recognized ten North Carolina businesses and non-profit cultural organizations for their contributions to the state's cultural climate at ceremonies in Raleigh in May 1999. Recipients all conducted innovative projects demonstrating excellence in literary, visual, or performing arts, historic resources or preservation, the humanities, or library resources.

      National Association of Interpretive Media
First Place in Public Interpretation, 1999

The National Park Service nominated the museum for this prestigious national award.

Mountain Heritage Award from Western Carolina University

This award was presented to the Museum of the Cherokee Indian in September 1998 in a special ceremony during Mountain Heritage Day. A person or organization is recognized annually for "outstanding contributions to the preservation or interpretation of the history and culture of southern Appalachia."
