Paleo Period: 11,000 B.C. to 8,000 B.C.
(Thirteen thousand to ten thousand years ago)
Paleo Indians were the first people in North America. Groups of several families moved seasonally to gather wild plant foods and hunt animals, including many now, extinct Ice Age mammals - like the Mastodon. Although little evidence remains, they probably lived in lean-to shelters, or took advantage of naturally occurring caves and overhangs. With the exception of a few well-made tools, very little Paleo material culture has survived.
