WHO:        The original American Indian people of the southeast

WHAT:      Southeast Tribes Festival
WHEN:      Friday and Saturday September 17-18, 2010
WHERE:   Cherokee Indian Fair Grounds, Hwy 441 Cherokee NC

HOW:        Adults $7 all-day pass; children ages 6-12 $3; Children 5 and under free.  EBCI members free with enrollment card

WHY:        To bring together the original tribes of the southeast for a two day reunion of dancing, food, storytelling, living history, arts and crafts demonstrations, stickball, blowguns, and running.

 

Thursday, Sept. 16*         

9 am-4 pm    Southeast Indian Writers Gathering (First EVER!)

                   At the Museum of the Cherokee Indian      

4 pm            Opening reception for Shan Goshorn (Eastern Band) show

                   At Western Carolina University Fine Art Museum

7 pm            Southeast Indian Writers Reading and book signing –Museum

 

Friday, Sept. 17    Cherokee Indian Fairgrounds

9 am - 5 pm    Dance, storytelling, food, living history encampments, and arts and crafts demonstrations

9 am - 2 pm    FIELD TRIP! School groups touring the Museum of the Cherokee Indian receive free admission to Southeast Tribes Festival

9 am—4 pm    Southeast Indian Writers Gathering  --Museum of the Cherokee      Indian

2 pm              Announcement of art show winners

5 pm              Marbles demonstration by Rob Daugherty and Cherokee Nation

7 pm -  9 pm  Warriors of AniKituwha, Mystic Lake (Choctaw), Seminole Dancers, Squirrel Ridge Stomp Grounds, Raven Rock, and more

 

Saturday, Sept. 18   Cherokee Indian Fairgrounds

8:00 am         Run For the Nations  At Kituhwa, Rt. 19 Bryson City

9:00 am         Southeast Tribes Festival 5K Run-- run open to the public.  Registration is $10 and includes an event t-shirt and festival admission  At Kituhwa

9 am - 5 pm   Dance, storytelling, food, living history encampments and cultural arts demonstrations

11 am            Blowgun competition

4pm—6 pm    Opening Reception for Gohigwuiyv Tsigi  “This is Modern!” Cherokee Contemporary Art    At the Museum of the Cherokee Indian

5 pm              Cherokee Stickball demonstration by the Wolftown Indian Ball Team

                     At Unity Field, Hwy 441

7 pm - 10 pm Warriors of AniKituwha, Mystic Lake (Choctaw), Seminole Dancers, and more

SPECIAL FIELD DAY FOR SCHOOL GROUPS

             FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 17, 2010

 Cherokee N.C.

 

For one special low rate, you can take your class to both a festival and museum.  Your students will have an interactive experience that will bring American Indian history and cultural curriculum to life.

 

Southeast Tribes Festival—from 9 am—2 pm 

  • Traditional dance by Warriors of AniKituwha (Cherokee), Raven Rock Dancers (Cherokee), Mystic Lake Stomp Dancers (Choctaw) and more
  • Storytelling
  • Living history encampments: Cherokee and Creek
  • Arts demonstrations: pottery, basket making, flintknapping, carving, and more,  by Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek, Seminole, and Chickasaw tribal members.

PLUS

Museum of the Cherokee Indian Tour  (allow one hour).  Please schedule your time in advance.

 

GROUP RATE INCLUDES SOUTHEAST TRIBES AND MUSEUM:
              Children ages 6-12:  $4.80/child.         

Children ages 13-up:   $8.00/child

One chaperone is free with every ten students.
